Beijing – The People and the City

You just helped clear up a nagging question I had.  In America, I have seen numerous women (who I now assume are Korean) hold their babies/young children lengthwise and pantsless over trash barrels so that they can pee!   I was horrified by what I saw, but it makes perfect sense if they don’t use diapers!

Oh, the haze can be so bad sometimes. I had been here a whole week, and I got up and opened the curtains, and I could see mountains! (live on the 12th floor) The first week I had not been able to see the mountains at all – I didn’t know they were part of my ‘view’!

I also love the night carts. Some make sense, like a candy cart or post-midnight chuar (meat on a stick) cart, but buying cups or bedding at 11pm? It can come in really handy sometimes. One day it was raining really bad and I hadn’t bought an umbrella yet. I could buy one when I left the subway station at this little table a woman had set up in front of the subway entrance.

Western-style places are quite expensive compared to the Chinese places. I could probably have a huge dinner for 30 kuai at a restaurant, or eat 3-4 times in the dining hall here at campus.

I think they recycle just to make some sort of small effort to combat all the pollution they cause. China is one of the biggest causers of air pollution.
