You can get by pretty well with English. Sure its a bonus if you speak Mandarin, but English (or Singlish, haha) is used everywhere. Within the Chinese community here, many dialects are used, and Cantonese is just one of them. Feel free to email me if you've got more questions about SG. It'd be nice to provide some you with some info, after having learnt so much from your blog all this while. :) P.S. Seeing as how you like to walk around while abroad, be sure to take a day to explore Luwan, Tian Zi Fang and the Old Town of Shanghai on foot. It's really pretty. Photo ops around every corner!
