Fabulously Broke in the City

Stole a meme off Couture Carrie

FB Reminder: I am away on vacation right now. This post has been scheduled ahead of time.
I won’t be moderating comments until end of August 2009. Thanks for your patience!

It’s a personal meme.

Skip if you don’t care.

Stay for the pictures.

Who is your favorite designer?
Rick Owens

Examples of his work:

If you could come back as a dress, what would it be? A patterned obi wrap dress of course.

Kind of like this one… (yes I bought it! The Etsy seller is making it for me right now as we speak!!).

If you could come back as a model, who would it be? Hard one. I’d say Coco Rocha.

I find her face with that short lip and hooked nose very interesting, and she was a stunning model for Annie Liebowitz’s Romeo & Juliet (my wallpaper).

And all the other models keep commenting on how hard she works. Plus, she’s a Canadian! From B.C.!

Junk food? You mean what junk food I’d be if I came back from life? Or what I like to eat?

Assuming the latter… I’d say nothing beats Cadbury Milk Chocolate for me.

Runner up is Cadbury’s delicious candy eggs.

FB’s Candy Goal? 100% Sugar

.

What are you most vain about? My smile.

I have an awesome set of even, beautiful teeth, if I say so myself.

People tell me that I’m always smiling.. which makes me smile more.

And it feels even better, looking at old pictures of my mangled, twisted teeth to know that the 3 years of utter PAIN from jaw surgery & braces was totally worth it.

What are you most shy about? When my face when it breaks out with little bumps of painful cystic acne that takes a month and a half to go away or go down.

I feel like the bumps are blinking, announcing to everyone that my skin is messed up!!!

But now with my magical sulphur-infused creams (Proactiv or Acnemol?!? .. or Mario Badescu), it goes away in a week instead of months.

If you could come back with someone else’s body, whose would it be? Er.. depending on what age I come back at, I guess I’d pick someone really fit/healthy who ended up living until the age of 120 or something while still being coherent & active.

But if we’re talking in terms of looks (breasts, legs, etc).. I’d like nothing more than my own body (with better, stronger knees, maybe).

I love my body the way it is.

Who are your fantasy dinner-party guests? Oh so many to name! I’m picking 12 in no particular order

  1. Ted Allen from Food Detectives (and Queer Eye back in the day!)
  2. President Barack Obama
  3. First Lady Michelle Obama
  4. Clinton Kelly from What Not To Wear
  5. Stephen Colbert
  6. The Virgin Mary
  7. Anthony Bourdain (of No Reservations)
  8. Jon Stewart
  9. Tim Gunn from Project Runway
  10. Hadrian the Roman Emperor
  11. A stone drunk George Bush Jr.
  12. Alexander the Great

Other Twitterers said….

Fantasy celebrity one-night stand? Sorry.. don’t do one-nighters.

Sorry! I really don’t.

Favorite place to have a drink? Er.. I also don’t really like to drink.

I’m really boring aren’t I?

Maybe in Portugal having a nice glass of authentic Porto (the only alcoholic drink I like, straight up)…

Underwear? Calvin Klein No VPL super thin, nude boyshorts.

What can’t you travel without? Entertainment.

Like my Netbook or iPod. iPod only, if I must choose.

Last book you read? Donald Trump’s — Think Big and Kick Ass

At age seven, you wanted to be . . . a pink ballerina.

What’s the thing you find easiest to forgive? An honest error or mix-up that resulted in something frustrating or heinous.

What’s the thing you find impossible to forgive? Betrayal or being consistently late no matter what the reason.

Biggest self-indulgence? Hard drives.

I have 8 of them.

Two 1 TB Western Digital Hard drives
One 500GB Western Digital Passport
Two 160GB Western Digital Passports
One 60 GB Western Digital Hard drive

I know I have another Seagate and a Comstar, and I think they’re 160GB and 120GB each.

Or something like that. Plus 4 USB keys.

Favorite place to shop [brick and mortar]? Target

Favorite place to shop online? Etsy.. HANDS DOWN!!!!!

Whose diary would you most like to read? BF’s

He doesn’t talk enough! Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m a mile-a-minute kind of girl, blabbing about everything, commenting here and there.. and he stays totally mum.

Nothing.

I’d like the diary to start from the day he was born (thoughts somehow Harry Pottered into a bowl or something, and Sieved into a book)..

And the diary has to be magical, to stay completely present up to today, and has to cover EVERYTHING he’s thinking about.

That’s not too much to ask.. right?

Least favorite food? Eggplant or Okra.

Slimy. I have never had good eggplant anything yet.

If you were an inventor, what would you invent? Being able to travel INSTANTLY at the speed of light.

I really hate flying and traveling. But I like getting to my destination, or coming home.

Alternatively, a true permanent cure for motion sickness. No pills, no patches, no scarfing down buckets of ginger to keep nausea away.

Who are your favorite furniture designers? Ikea?

I’m not even kidding… I don’t know any furniture designers. I just know what I like and what I don’t.

Maybe Eames because of that super comfy Eames lounge chair, and the fact that I found a pic of a baby Pug sitting in one that I am obessed over?

Car? A Mercedes

I just like the cars. Probably a childhood preference thing, as my family seems to prefer that brand.

What was your childhood nickname? I didn’t have one.

Really! I didn’t! Unless you count my siblings calling me Piglet.

But it wasn’t a nice nickname or a real one.

More like a childhood insult.

When and where are you happiest? In bed.

When I am lying there, propped up, curled up in the covers, cup of hot tea beside me, raspberry cream cookies, watching movies on my Netbook/iPod/Laptop.

What piece of art would you most like to own? Monet’s Waterlilies

What are your favorite vacation spots? Anywhere interesting.

I just like visiting new countries and experiencing different cultures, foods, ways of life and living.

Thinking about it, I’d like to visit Japan again but I wouldn’t call it a vacation spot.

Most treasured possession? External Hard drive

Has my whole life on there! Literally.

Favorite fictional character? Alice in Wonderland….

And there’s an AWESOME rendition of Alice in Wonderland from Walt Disney pics coming out directed by TIM BURTON!!!! Check out the trailer here.

Favorite musicians? Various!

Lily Allen, Black Eyed Peas, DubFX, System of a Down, Audioslave…

If you had another profession beside your own, what would it be? Clothing or Jewelery Designer.

I’d love to just do simple basics. Over and over again, different patterns, fabrics, colours… but with a twist.

What current trends would you like to see disappear? Hammer Pants

Harem pants, hammer pants, diapers.. whatever you want to call them. Out!

Other than that, any fashion transgression like too low or too tight pants, butt cleavage, trashy sparkly sequined animal prints.. you know, the usual.

Favorite trend of all time? Ballet flats

Was this even a “trend”? I think it was at one point. Flat shoes were soooo in. I love that they’re comfortable, practical and stylish.

Always… blogging & surfing the web

Never… forgetting to eat

Almost all my books are gone

Lisa Joy said: Which books are you keeping, Minimalist FB? Tell me.. TELL ME!

Umm.. none. *sheepish*

I thought about keeping my favourites like the Anne Bishops, Kinsellas, Eddings, so on and on, but in the end, I dug deep into my soul and asked myself if I really wanted to lug all of these heavy books in an already limited suitcase space across the world.

Took me 3 seconds to decide to get rid of all of them. I was a demoness in cleaning out my room!!!

The only books I kept were:

  • Manga I absolutely cannot part with (Usagi Yojimbo & Lone Wolf and Cub) — Back me up on this Revanche….
  • My yearbooks (Call me sentimental…)
  • 3 books I couldn’t find in e-books and were out of print

Everything else that could be found on (.pdf) or in an e-book, went away to live in other people’s homes.

I sorted them into “SELL” and “DONATE” piles, and let me tell you, that donate pile was 8 boxes FULL of books, even BF my Minimalist Partner in Crime was shocked.

BF: That’s a LOT of stuff. FB: Umm.. I like to read. You saw my old pictures. I was fat. How did you think I got fat? By reading. BF: Are you telling me that books made you fat? How is that possible? Reading burns more calories. FB: No. Eating chocolate while reading a lot as an inactive child made me fat. I didn’t read enough to burn off 800 calories every hour. Trust me.

I sold about 30% of the books I owned. Any book that is fairly recent, hard covered mostly, in like-new condition and fun went into my bags and I trudged downtown to sell them all.

Made $180 total, but I think my back is screaming in protest from what I had to lug around.

Note to self: Bring a suitcase on rollies next time.

By the way, a little tip from me to you, used bookstores are surprisingly picky about what they take.

They love books on Philosophy & obscure subjects I never read, so I was SOL there.

I could have definitely sold them on Amazon, but unluckily for me, I live in Canada, and shipping up here is a b*tch on crack. If I was in the States, no problem. Shipping is pretty cheap for y’all, but not up here.

Plus, I’m only there for a short period of time. I don’t have time to be listing and selling suitcases full of books just to make a couple of dollars, when living in a different city.

I just want(ed) the clutter GONE.

In fact, I’m itching to go back and donate more….

*hearting on Etsy* & how to search Etsy efficiently

FB Reminder: I am away on vacation right now. This post has been scheduled ahead of time.
I won’t be moderating comments until end of August 2009. Thanks for your patience!

Quick tutorial on how to browse and use Etsy:

1. Browse!

Just try browsing a couple of pages, and if you see something remotely interesting, click on the link, look at it, and look at the seller and what else they’re selling. Generally, if you like their style you may like what else they have to sell on the site.

2. Narrow down the categories.

I narrow it down to JUST necklaces because it’s all I really wear. And I like really funky pieces, but I do look for things like pearls (faux on a budget), or gunmetal chain.. that sort of thing. And I just put that word in the search after narrowing it down to Categories > Jewelery > Necklaces.

Then I just apply rule #1 above, and click on sellers that look interesting.

I tend to “heart” everything I like, and then go through and edit the list. Generally if an item stays on the past past a couple of edits, it means I really like it… and then I tend to buy it :P

That’s pretty much all I do to find cool pieces. :)

This is a necklace from Street Noodles (Ellen Ikemoto) on Etsy for $42. It’s similar to the pearl one I bought with the 2 black filigree flowers.

By howlindoggie – it’s a big Sakura Pendant for $42. I like the modern, sleek lines of the necklace, with a bit of an Asian feel.

I like quirky necklaces, so this one from betsyandiya called the ‘woman’ necklace for $148 is really up my alley. I like the mix of the pearls, chains and stones.

The best thing about this Sarah Necklace for $38 from TheFinishingTouch is that you can pick which pearl colours you want … or maybe they’d do a mix of them? How pretty would this be?

For something more forest-y, here’s a Rockabye Birdies in the Treetop Pendant by GypsyLane for $68. I like the idea of the bird swooping down to the nest…

For a creepyish but modern kind of necklace, it’s an Anatomical Heart Design by laurelhill for $96. I wouldn’t know it’s a heart by looking at it because it looks so modern!

I am not a huge fan of pins in general, but Cynthia does some pretty cool flowers in a copper patina. This one is her Hibiscus pin by cynthiadelgiudice for $40.
