A lot of managers out there are promoted not because they\'re good but because of nepotism or seniority. I also think that some people are great at different levels. Some are great on the front lines or at the bottom (like me) and others are better as project managers or managers (NOT me). It all depends on where you shine, and if you do a great job in one area, it won\'t necessarily translate to another.

It explains a lot about a senior manager I have the misfortune to work with. I'm quite sure she got the position based on who she knew rather than any decent skills because she has none: she's the most disorganised person I know, doesn't listen good advice from people who know what they're doing (she's the manager, therefore she feels it's HER opinion that matters), useless at meeting her own deadlines but happy to slap unrealistic ones on other people and cannot make her mind on important decisions (normally when we're midway through tryiing to meet said unrealistic deadline and have to re-do things to accomodate her wants).

There doesn't appear to be any redeeming skills that prove she's fit for the job. And yet she gets away with it because she IS a manager - you can't say a word against her without people shrugging 'oh that's the way she is'. If you're a manager, you are untouchable in this company because it's friends hiring friends! In the meantime there are plenty of highly skilled underlings who would probably do a much better job but will never get the opportunity. Glad I'm leaving for a new job shortly!
