Interesting concept, the only question I would have about your calculations is only 5 hours for cleaning, I would spend close to 5 hours a week cleaning ( I'm including general tidying, washing up, and bigger chores such as bathroom, floors etc) and I live alone with no kids. I expect there may be more time spent cleaning but of course varies with every family.

continued from above.

It's torture. Water boarding. It is hiding behind the fridge so you can eat an oreo. It's never having complete privacy on the toilet (their little fingers even creep under the bathroom door.) It's locking yourself in the crawl space crying because the questions, the pulling and tugging, the bickering, the timeouts, the school projects and voluteering never EVER stops. Until it does. And that's when you're grateful for all those memories born of quantity time that can't be found on that yearly Bahaman vacation or Wii game collection . Or so my therapist tells me.

"The mothers do the math, they figure out how much it costs to stay at home, versus going back to work, even with childcare and having to buy work clothes… and more often than not, they go back to work because it’s more financially responsible ..."
I believe that comment is the sunny side of shite. MANY mom's freely admit that given the option, they'd rather go back to work. Being a SAHP isn't "difficult". Making sandwiches is easy. Reading stories is doable. Cooking/crafting with the boogers takes very little intelligence or skill but what others don't get is that you're doing it all the frick frackin' time!...

"Honey Do" list.. *giggle*

Thank you for not taking the post in the wrong direction. I always worry (slightly) that it comes off otherwise.

I forgot about that childcare charge per minute. That, is incredible! But I can see parents taking advantage of it if the rule wasn't in place.

I think you are close to a realistic figure for a SAHM value. One thing that would be a challenge to factor in is childcare per child, as a daycare charges around a hundred dollars a week per kid (with a dollar a minute for every minute the parent is late picking up their child).

There are LOT of spouses who don't really do much around the house when they are home. They may tackle the "honey do" list on weekends but that's about it. One friend of mine had her husband quit his job.. he sat at home for almost a year without even lifting a finger to clean (he did cook tho).

The title of SAHM is an honorable one to have. I wish I had a spouse so that I could wear it. Instead I find a happy medium as a single mom by earning as much money out of the home as I can so to be able to spend as much time with my kid as possible.

I have always found those huge numbers to be a bit off-putting--Thanks for giving the subject an honest assessment
