Fabulously Broke in the City

Just signed a lease to save $200/month.

Old apartment: $1030/month (new rate for 2009 is $1080 an increase of $50)

Covered parking: $60/month

I paid $575 each month for rent and parking

New apartment: $769/month

Covered parking is still $60/month

I will now pay $384.50/month, and possibly up to $444.50 a month with parking.

  • A lot more free parking available
  • Am only going to get a covered parking spot if I get a contract and it’s in middle of winter

MONTHLY SAVINGS = $190.50 (or $130.50 with parking)

Which means my bare “essentials” (internet and cellphone, NOT really essentials) for each month will now be:

Sweet. I could probably drop my budget down to $1000 a month and still be comfortable. ($203 for entertainment and other).

FreeGeek.org

A wonderful reader tipped me off to a site that I am completely intrigued by:

FreeGeek.org

FreeGeek.org basically takes old technology or electronics off your hand, and connects the community to the internet, one budding geek at a time.

Why throw away, break down or send it to stores to recycle electronics that work perfectly fine but just don’t fit your life any longer because you upgraded?

Just donate it.

(P.S. Ginger tipped me off that I forgot to mention that they are ONLY in Oregon, but I emailed asking if I could mail items..)

And the answer is yes:

Hardware Donations
Free Geek
1731 SE 10th Ave
Portland, OR 97214

For people who just do not have the cash to spend even $200 on a computer, this is a great way to get connected with thanks to others’ generosity.

It also really appeals to my eco-friendly side, because it’s an organization based on Reusing and Recycling, and at least now I know where to send items that I can’t sell (nor want to sell), and benefit the community as well.

Not only that, they ask that you don’t bring in a lot of packaging, they don’t take styrofoam, and they want eco-friendly cleaning products.

HOW IT WORKS

I don’t talk much about donations and I don’t have it in my budget, but I do donate quite regularly to the Canadian Cancer Society because of the diseases’ effects on my family, but something like this charity really stirs my blood being a technophile.

As someone who is really into technology (2 laptops, 1 netbook, 6 external hard drives and counting), I do admit that I spend a lot of cash on this obsession.

I like being on the cutting edge and with that being said, I do imagine that in a couple years or so, I may want to sell some of my electronics or something.

By the way, a little glossary to help (this is from my brain, not from what experts on the ‘net say)

  • Trailing Edge = You use or get technology from 15 years ago.
  • Cutting Edge = You get the newest tech items about 6-24 months after it arrives on the market.
  • Bleeding Edge = You get the newest item the day or week it arrives on the market.

But let’s be frank — 30GB external hard drives are not in high demand by anyone on the market for any more than $10 – $15.

And if I can donate it instead to a cause as worthy as FreeGeek.org to help empower others to learn about technology and love it the way I do, I’d feel better overall.

HERE’S WHAT THEY TAKE OTHER THAN CA$H
( TO PAY FOR RENT AND INTERNET CONNECTIONS)

Suggested (short but not exhaustive) list of Donations:

  • A/V Gizmo ($3.00 ea.)
  • Camera ($2.00 ea.)
  • Computers ($5.00 ea.)
  • Printers ($4.00 ea.)
  • Scanners ($3.00 ea.)
  • LCD monitors ($4.00 ea.)
  • Keyboards and Mice ($1.00 ea.)
  • Networking Devices ($1.00 ea.)
  • Fax Machines ($4.00 ea.)
  • Telephones, including Cell Phones ($2.00 ea.)
  • Stereo Components ($4.00 ea.)
  • UPS ($5.00 ea.)
  • Other miscellaneous gizmos ($1.00 ea.)

Their wishlist of non-tech donations:

  • Phillips head screwdrivers
  • Wire cutters and cable cutters
  • Stardrivers (Torx) size T20 and smaller
  • Nutdrivers
  • Powerdrivers w/rechargers
  • Multi-testers
  • Needlenose pliers
  • Cleaning supplies (especially dish soap, sponges, trash bags and ecofriendly cleaning products like Simple Green)
  • First aid supplies (bandages!)
  • Rubber bands
  • Printer paper (8.5″x11″, suitable for laser printers)
  • Toilet paper
  • Food (snacks, juice, chocolate)
  • Tape (packing, masking, duct)
  • Shop carts

We DO NOT Accept:

  • Styrofoam
  • Microwave Ovens
  • Copiers
  • Smoke Detectors
  • Household Appliances (including air conditioners)
  • Batteries
  • Fluorescent Light Bulbs

FINALLY, FB’S PROMISE

For the month of April 2009, any extra money I make off Adsense clicks (ads on the left side of my page), PayperPost, budgeting sheet and so on, I will donate the amount I earned via Paypal to FreeGeek.org.

To those of us who can afford it, please consider doing the same, or donating to another charity of your choice.

NEW APARTMENT IN JUNE?

BF and I are in the process of looking at new apartments to move into after our May lease is up.

Well, I lied. BF is looking, I’m bouncing along for the ride and checking out places with him.

As long as we don’t go over the $575 a month I already pay for rent (parking + rent alone), I was cool with anything.

And much cooler with a SMALLER space (no bedroom required).

So we checked out apartments all around the city and the island, and turns out we’re better off staying in our building, but moving to a different floor and into a smaller studio.

I could drop my rent to $445/month each which would be a savings of $130/month.

Every little bit counts!

Real Simple says it doesn’t have to be difficult to haggle with your health insurance company. A couple of good tips are to not procrastinate (a good life rule in general), and take detailed notes about who you talked to, when and what about.

Why the hell do companies think that women want everything in pink with makeup and a mirror? WHY? WHY!? Check out this “female-laptop concept” showcased by Ubergizmo.

Companies, what I want is CHOICE, in patterns, colours, and sleekness. I don’t want everything in black, I don’t want everything in grey, and I most certainly don’t want it all in PINK.

I would also like y’all to stop making cords ALL BLACK because it’s making it hard to find cords in my bag because they all look the same to me — I had to label each one with a sticker because of your short-sightedness.

Ginger from Girls Just Wanna Have Funds says that white collar women who were pulling in the big bucks before, are losing their jobs, giving up and stripping to make money instead. The owner of one of those strip clubs says he got SO MANY applications from all levels of life, even he was surprised. Watch the video and read the entire article here (along with my comment).

I am sort of a sucker for anything lemon. Lemon tarts, lemon yoghurt, lemon poppyseed, lemon on salmon.. you name it. So when I hear about this recipe from Crumbly Cookie telling us how to make Lemon Poppyseed Waffles, I got excited.

Apparently, the magic words of life are not “PLEASE” and “THANK YOU”, it’s “IS THAT THE BEST YOU CAN DO?” Not in caps of course. Free Money Finance says that for negotiation, “Is that the best you can do?” followed by silence can yield some really fabulous results. Give it a shot!

Need some patterns for the background of your Twitter page? Look no further! Here are some really great Twitter Patterns for free. Via Twitter Patterns. But you can only use them on your Twitter pages!!

According to Namby Pamby, Attorney-at-Law, drinking and sex are the 2 greatest cavity preventers. Do you believe it?

Stressed out on Mondays? Real Simple tells us 10 ways to beat the stress of Mondays — some I like, but when you’ve got a LOT to get done, you can’t exactly skip important emails for an hour or two because people get pretty peeved when you don’t answer in a timely manner for a project on deadline.

Is it still tasty? Still Tasty will tell you if it is — like if you left a pizza out over night, is it still okay to eat? The answer for me is Yes, unless it was left out in very hot, humid weather and it sweated bacteria. Read on about all the things you can and cannot eat. Here’s one I find useful: Raw Salmon.

Not geting enough well rested sleep? Dumb Little Man tells us the Google Method to getting better sleep.
My favourite tip is to sleep at the same time every night and wake up at the same time each morning, every single day. Even on weekends. I never miss a day, and if I do, I really feel it in the next day and I have to re-train my body.

Couture Carrie gives us Safari.. but not the nasty zebra mixed with strange prints kind of safari, this is an elegant take on an upcoming (re-hashed, re-worked trend) that I am now starting to be a fan of. Check out all of her wonderful shots from high fashion runways featuring Safari.

Ever heard of a Hello Kitty Hospital? Me neither. Apparently K.Rae’s blog Smart! has found it, in Taiwan. I am not surprised at all, because Hello Kitty is HUGE in Asia..

Mary from SimplyForties asks us what the deal is with recyclable beauty product packaging.

Manufacturers are tricksy in making you think that they’re environmentally friendly when in fact all they did was put a green-ish cast on all of their packaging, call it “Naturally Organic (TM)” with 5% organic ingredients and the rest as nasty chemicals and it makes us think they’re fabulous.

You have to be a really conscious eco-friendly consumer these days to see and cut through the hype. Manufacturers don’t bother doing recyclable containers for makeup but it may in fact save them money and gain them a fab reputation for being green as well as being a healthier cosmetic for your body.

Angie from youlookfab teaches us how to work a turquoise scarf (with 4 shots of her in different outfits), which is a nice alternative to the chunky necklace. Personally, I prefer the chunky necklace because scarves are not really my thing unless they’re designer Hermes scarves tied to my bags or something for a bit of flair.

Every Joe suggests we REVERSE our email composition to create a better email. Start with any attachments you need to add (smart idea), move on to the body of what you want to say, make up an ACCURATE subject to describe that body, and then fill in the people last (your list may have changed as you wrote the body of the email). Great tips.

This is the most romantic, girliest bed, EVER with treetop cut outs and a sweetness that is not totally pink pink pink and in your face. Too bad a man will probably never want to sleep in it. Ever. Via Apartment Therapy.

Eco-Chick reports that there is a $2000 USD car called the Nano from Tata available in India now. Which makes it the perfect price point to put another vehicle on its already clogged streets for approximately 14 million families.

That does not sound fab for Mother Earth, or for the Indians, in my opinion.

Speaking of cars, Living Almost Large (one of my favourite PF-only bloggers) says that in the end, buying a Prius is not really worth the money unless you drive more than 12,000 miles a year. Interesting.

Andrea from QueerCents says that making an oilcloth lunchbag could be a viable solution. She tried Martha Stewart’s recipe for making one and if she’s as bad as a seamstress as I am, I can only imagine the results. Just kidding.

This made me laugh — Classy Chaos calls it the “Fifi Nod“, where her daughter has a technique to get what she wants, and I heard the Head Tilt works too. Kids are too cute for words sometimes.

I agree with Sugar Laws. There is really nothing better than a Smoked Salmon Blini with Creme Fraiche and Caviar. NOM!

Alex from QueerCents retells the story of the way mortgage brokers were doing business back in the day. That is really creepy, and being caught up against the wall when NO ONE will help you is a hard thing to dela with.

The creepiest is the comment the broker said before she left “Now, don’t let this house foreclose!” WTF!

Moving on to funnier things, Namby Pamby, Attorney-at-Law made me laugh with his sense of humour in the morning. And I commented that I only know about lawyers from the information gleaned from movies and TV, and they all seem so dry and serious. So it’s nice to have a lawyer with a sense of humour.

Need some tips on how to deal with a dual office situation in your home? The Unclutterer will show AND tell you how to get ‘er done with design in mind. BF and I don’t ever have a problem because I LOVE using a table and a chair and he likes lying down on the bed with the laptop on his belly.

Want to know the 12 most expensive foods on earth? Woman’s Day will tell ya. The funniest were the coffee beans passed (ahem) by a civet cat and sold for around $230/pound.

Moms on the go, take heart! You do NOT need to revert from your once-fashionable and chic self into a sweatpants + flip flops slob. Angie from youlook fab proved that with a on-the-go mother named Laura. Check out the awesome outfit sets of what to wear in the post.

A really fabulous blogger Londyn, posted her amazing closet. The shoes, the necklaces.. all neatly arranged and EXACTLY the way I had my closet before. Part 1 of her Closet was here.

It’s gorgeous. I’ll post pics of my old closet soon, I promise.

Speaking of fashion, I’ve (lately) been enamoured with this blog: What Claudia wore by Kim. Claudia in reference to Claudia Kishi from The Babysitter’s Club (one of my favourite book series as a girl). This recent post of hers made me crack up, especially with that great Photoshopped book near the end.

The Frugal Bachelor kicks our ass by telling us: “PF BLOGGERS AREN’T CHALLENGING ENOUGH!“, and getting out of debt is boring for him to read about now… Which is kind of true. I’m aiming just to pay for my retirement, not end up eating cat food when I die covered in newspapers for warmth, and to have children on the path of financial success and happiness.

I don’t want or feel the need to be a billionaire, or even a millionaire by the age of 30. Arbitrary goals just to pick a number like a million. A better goal would be to figure out what you want to change about the world and do it.

If you are looking for a new frugal blog, FreeShipping.org has launched one! It looks pretty good, and features a couple of posts from PF bloggers all over the blogosphere.

And to end it all on a good note, Tristan from Find Financial Freedom gives us the top tips on how to save money.. the funny ones. I snorted at a couple of them, like the ones on going out to dinner or a date.
