Good advice. I was in your beautiful country recently and clocked up a fair bit of mileage - on more or less the same principles.

1. Drink a lot of water while traveling. It's easy to forget and end up feeling sick and dehydrated.

2. Don't wait to buy a book at the airport, otherwise you'll be stuck paying cover price for something you probably wouldn't read otherwise. Go to a good used bookstore or the internet (half.com) and stock up paperbacks for travel reading if you travel often. You'll save a lot of money and you'll have much better reading choices.

Re: Travel lightly with rolling cases

I have given up on attempting to put my own suitcase up in the overhead compartment on airplanes. I'm 4'11" and quite muscular, but it is still too tricky for me to lift a suitcase so far above my head without possibly poking someone's eye out in the process!

At this point, if I know I can't do it myself, I just ask the nearest tall looking man. I'm sure they don't appreciate it, but I'm sure they also wouldn't appreciate me dropping my suitcase on their lap.

If they don't want me bringing only carry-on luggage, then airlines should stop charging for checked baggage again.

Ugh, I was on travel for 6 weeks last winter & tracking expenses was really hard! I ate out every day, so random expenses just kept cropping up & of course they names they use on the online system aren't usually understandable.

Thanks for the tips though! This reminds me that I need to pack for my trip home!

Good advice and v. timely with the holiday traveling season here! One other tip I'd offer is to check-in online and print your boarding pass if at all possible. Especially if you're only bringing a carry-on, this can save a ton of time since you just breeze right through to the security line as soon as you get to the airport.
