Mittsie: Any time!

Simply40s: Yes, it's because I think Savings should be more liquid and easier to dip into for short emergencies, but an Emergency Fund should be for when I'm really up the creek without a paddle. :)

Revanche: HAHAH! $50K. I never thought anyone would save more than me. Now you're making me nervous. I want to save $50k now.

Eric: I only do donations/charities as they come along such as the Canadian Cancer Society. I don't set aside specific %s of money for that.

Bryan: I used to live cheque to cheque, so I know how it feels and I don't want to go back there.

It's a nice feeling to have an emergency fund. It's contributes to a peaceful state of mind. I couldn't imagine living from paycheck to paycheck like some people do.

Hah, and I thought my conservative estimate of wanting 50K as emergency money was crazy. Now, thanks to your justification, it sounds perfectly reasonable! It's only almost 2 years worth of cushion. ;)

Really good, solid advice. I'm surprised you differentiate between regular savings and emergency fund. Is that because you have different allocation ideas for each? Your monthly expenses are admirably low (emergency fund-wise). I'm working on getting mine way down so my emergency fund will go farther.

Thanks for that post, hun! That's even a big help to me, since by the spring I'll be "self-employed" too - making stuff & selling it on etsy.

I borrowed "Personal Finance for Dummies" from our library to read ... and it just confused the f*ck out of me. lol. (But I'll be fine. Dad's a retired chartered accountant - so he can help.)
