I have a question -- Is there a website or formula that allows you to figure out what the breakdown for a gross and net salary would be, so that I could figure out what my real salary would be per month? I'm contemplating a move to NYC but live in texas (the opposite of you!) and wasn't sure how to figure out what my real take home salary would be...

any suggestions or help you can offer would be appreciated.

thanks
desiarabi

This is great advice! Something like this would take me about 6 months to figure out and I would still screw it up!

Sallies: Yes, she keeps $40k of it in Ontario :)

Courtney: That's just my estimations :) Personally I'd just pay for rent, food, basic living stuff, and put everything to debt if it were me - that's how I did it, and I think I put over 50% into debt to get out of it.

Brilliant! Thanks!! Hypothetically speaking, she should definitely minimize the clothing and entertainment departments. Seriously, what twenty something is reaallly lacking in clothing so much that she needs to spend $160 on it a month when they're that far in debt! haha.. (a point my husband brought out in our recent budgeting session :) )

This is a fabulous primer for someone just getting started. I couldn't help getting stuck on the line where you said she would keep $40k of her $50k salary. Is that so? Yikes I have got to move to Canada! I only get to keep $29k/$44k salary in the States and I'm gonna owe taxes!
