FB’s Grammar and Spelling Pet Peeves

It’s rooting for her as in cheering, not routing.

It’s fourth for the number, as in the “Fourth of July”, not forth which means onward, as in “Go forth and conquer”

It’s they’re not their or there (and vice versa).

They’re is “they are”, their is “their dog was white”, and there is “there is the service station”.

It’s strengTh not strenghT.

Much like how it can be your pen, but you’re using it right now. You’re is “you are” and can’t be used as “your” as a replacement. And under no circumstances may you use the ghetto texting “ur” as a substitute. *shudder*

It’s a lot not alot

It’s clique for a group, not click

Farther is distance like “that tree is farther than I thought” and Further relates to a degree of time like “further in the future”

Stationery refers to paper that you write on and Stationary refers to something being still like “That car is stationary for now”

It’s is “it is” like “It’s half past nine”, and its refers to a possessive like “Its coat was white”, you wouldn’t say “It is coat was white”

Aisle is like the grocery aisle but Isle is like an Island. Like: “propose to the person you’re stranded on a desert isle with and maybe you’ll march down the aisle together after you’re rescued.”

To accept a gift is wonderful, but the bride asked for anything except pots and pans for her wedding day.

When you use the word “for”, you can use the spelling awhile. Without the preposition “for”, you have to spell it a while. “Lend me your iPod awhile”, or “Lend me your iPod for a while”.

There are thousands more, I’m sure… but these are the ones I hate the most I can think of.

‘Rooting’ means something else entirely here in Australia …we all fall about laughing when we see someone wearing Roots merchandise, juvenile maybe, but it keeps us amused.

Ooooh, you got a lot of my pet peeves in there! Nice.

I think you may have forgotten to misspell a lot (as “alot”) in your entry though, and the “awhile” examples are reversed…but your point was made.

This was my very first blog topic – and I could blog about it every other day!

    Your the best.

An ex-friend (who’s a journalist) wrote a blog post a while back and used the word vespers when she meant vespas. And some other journo wrote canvass instead of canvas. And this same ex-friend once wrote comedienne when she was referring to a male…and should’ve used comedian

Actually, this prompts me to write my own little post about all my grammar and spelling peeves.

Further can also be used like ‘farther’
    1. at or to a greater distance; farther: I’m too tired to go further.
    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Further

and i think you typoed on alot, both are the same!

You already know that I am right there with you on the grammar and spelling, but I must mention how fabulous a post this is!

All of these drive me nuts.

In Russian I am a grammar nazi too :)

How about when people say “eXscape” instead of “escape” or “supposably” instead of “supposedly”. EWW. My husband does this thing where he’ll write in emails or letters “I look foreward to…” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told him that there isn’t an ‘E’ in that usage. :/

You’ve got me thinking about other word uses that get butchered! How about affect/effect and principle/principal. I could go for days…

    Oh, dear. Can open…worms everywhere.

How about who’s/whose? I remember learning the difference way back in third grade, so adults have no excuse for that one.

Oh, and lose/loose. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve read about someone wishing to “loose weight”. Oy!

omg you know what really pisses me off?

when somebody says “he SAYS we’ll get it tomorrow”

no hunny it’s “he SAID we’ll get it tomorrow”

it drives me nuts! and it happens all the time to me at work!

Oh but you can’t be seriously, I mean it makes me mad “alot” “to” but “your” just overreacting.

…Oh lord, I know what you mean. I was in yearbook and when people pulled those on me I would be like “How the heck did you even get into this elective!?”

yeah i agree with debtdieter – rooting makes us aussies snicker childishly!
    ie:
`We’re rooting for the whole team!’
    (ha! ha!)

I’m anti-grammar nazi. I typically don’t make the obvious mistakes (which I consider most all of those above), and I always spell check in business settings (and in firefox) which saves my butt.

But more so then grammar mistakes, my pet peeve is grammar nazi’s!

I’m a little less forgiving of spoken errors. Only a little.

PS – then/than was just to bug you ;)

    LOL!!

The rooting one is making me laugh. I promise I’ll never use it around Aussies now..

It’s just little spelling mistakes that make me just frustrated lol..

If I know I made the mistake (and I made one – alot and a lot in there but more of a typo), then I want to know and to correct it

I used to spell library as libary… Until I learned!!!

I have to admit I stopped reading a lot of blogs due to atrocious spelling and grammar mistakes.
It's sad because I really liked what some of them had to say. But if they can't even get the grammar in the title of their posts right, I'm done.

    But not the easy ones!

Hi, I tried to go to your blog and comment, but when I clicked on “Leave a comment”, NOTHING came up for me to type in at the bottom.

Am I doing something weird, or wrong?
