Wedding budget.. meet reality

Guy Friend: “So, how’s your wedding planning going?”

Girl Friend: “Pretty good, I’m just really trying to stick under budget because a wedding can get REALLY expensive.”

Guy Friend: “How many people are you inviting?”

Girl Friend: “Oh, like 150 or so. But that’s a lot of people, so the costs keep going up, especially for the reception and venue.”

Guy Friend: “Yeah, well a wedding budget of like, $100,000 for 150 people to try and keep under can be really difficult….”

Girl Friend & FB in unison: “$100,000!?!?!?!?!??!?!? ARE YOU CRAZY?”

Guy Friend: “What? What’d I say?”

FB: “DAMN! The woman that marries you is going to have a very elaborate wedding..”

Guy Friend: “What are you talking about? Isn’t that a budget for a wedding?”

FB: “Uhh… NO. $100,000 is for a wedding for 400 to 600 people, not 150! The normal wedding budget is around $20,000 to $30,000”

Guy Friend: “Oh…. Whatever. Shows you how much I know about how much weddings cost. I’m so far removed from that stuff…”

Girl Friend: “Jeez.”

FB: “That’s like a down payment on a good sized home!!!”

Gawd… talk about my friends not keeping in touch with reality. But I guess I have to give him some slack because he IS a guy after all. What the hell does he know about weddings?

His budget for a wedding in his mind has always been $100,000 for some reason, but then again, he graduated without debt and all that so…. LOL … Not big on the budgeting and frugality thing, but he does know how to save his money, just maybe not as much as he could. He’s just really enjoying it at this time in his life and there is NOTHING wrong with that, as long as he can make his mortgage payments and save. :D

Wow, my dream wedding would probably cost that… but reality? I doubt it!

When I got married we just had a registry office service and then took ourselves and our boys for a day to the coast with a lovely meal-if you’re truly happy, it can be done on a shoestring!!

Geeze! If my guy had 100k for a wedding, I’d elope and stash it in the bank.

$100k IS the budget for a 150 person where I grew up. Of course, mommy and daddy would pay for their darling daughters wedding, but that was about par for course. People used to take out second mortgages.

Mr. Frugal Urbanite and I didn’t get married in my hometown for a reason.

Depends on where you live. I know someone who spent that recently in NY for about 150 people. Gotta figure with everything!

Band, gown, reception, church, tuxes, dresses, etc.

Would I spend it? Well maybe, depends on how much money the guy/I have. If we can easily afford $100k, and aren’t hurting, meaning we’ve got more in the bank sure.

And trust me this couple, her parents paid and they ARE LOADED (mega). So yes it can be affordable for some. And it’s not wrong to afford it, since they worked hard.

Ouch! We paid less than $5,000 for ours — and that was with a sit down dinner, full jazz band, and over 100 people. We were a bit creative, but everything was fabulous. I’ve been told that it was nicer than much more expensive weddings that people had attended and I can’t help but agree.

I guess he wasn’t very clued in about weddings. But some girl could really rope him if he thought that was how much she should be spending! Zoinks!

I totally get that some families can afford it but for SURE he could NOT afford it and his parents wouldn’t pay for that…. which is why I got surprised – he was willing to go into debt for it

If you can afford it – go for it – but if you can’t, a more realistic budget is $20k-$30k….. or $5000 if you’re on a frugal budget (me) LOL

Wow. Wow. Ours was more like $3-5000. I wonder what his general thoughts are about how much things cost. A house? Would that be a couple million?

My wedding: Vegas – $1200 tops. I ain’t crazy – I’ll take all that extra $$$ and put it on a house.

I saw way too many friends go into debt over wedding expenses. I’d rather not go down that rabbit hole.

    He’s just clueless about weddings
