Give up? It's a Chloé Paddington Capsule Satchel: the perfect blend of tough and tender, this washed lambskin bag is accented with stud and chain details.
Retail price: $1980 before tax.
Just the other day, my friend flounced in with a new bag on her arm. As you may have guessed, it was that bag.
Friend: *shrieking* LOOK WHAT I BOUGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FB: Umm.. the bag? It's new?
Friend: Of course. *weird look* When have you seen me carrying around THIS bag? I've only been whining about it for ages.
FB: It's nice. The leather looks soft, I kind of like the chained padlock thing. Very cool.
Friend: Uh huh. *suspicious glance* Umm... FB, do you even KNOW what bag this is?
FB: A very nice one? A pretty mocha coloured one?
Friend: OMG. You just did NOT say that. It's a Chloé Paddington Capsule Satchel..!!
FB: And that means......?
Friend: Do you KNOW how much this costs!?!?
FB: Well where'd you buy it and I can tell ya. H&M?
Friend: BITE YOUR TONGUE! Holt Renfrew!
FB: LOL! So in that case, if *I* would've paid maybe $100 for it and Holt Renfrew tends to triple prices on everything, did you pay $300 for it? Maybe $500? I mean, $500 to ME is a LOT for a purse.
*thinking about the snowballing she'd do to her debt*
Friend: I am going to have a heart attack. Right now. RIGHT NOW. You're killing me. I'm going to fall over and DIE.
FB: Why!? Wait. Did you pay less? That'd be surprising at Holt Renfrew. *totally teasing her*
Friend: No. I paid over $2000 for it! It's the bag I've been eying in the store the last time we went in.
So anyway... I won't bore you with the rest of the conversation but I just wanted to ask her if she bought the bag just because it gave her pleasure (half true), or if she bought that SPECIFIC bag just so 1% of the entire population would be able to reocgnize the bag and oooh and aah over the fact that it's a Chloé Paddington Capsule Satchel for $2000.
Umm.. I'm into fashion too, well not as much as some women, but I like REAL fashion for real women with style tips and nothing too crazy that's just meant for the runway or the red carpet.
So a specific bag like the Chloé Paddington Capsule Satchel, I'd never even know what the hell it was until that day - now, I know what it is and how much it costs, but only because I learned it from my friend.
Did she just buy the bag to show off? To front like she HAS money to spend but really doesn't? I don't know.. (probably is my answer), but it's a bit of a farce to purchase something just to impress other women or gay men (unless of course you're a straight guy who's been pestered by your girlfriend to buy her one).So why is it that people in general, not just women, buy items like this just so they can show off to 1% of the population? And even so, the rest wouldn't be that impressed over a bag. They may be more impressed over the fact that you SAVED $2000 in bonds and now you have $10,000 for a downpayment or something similar.
Not that you spent $2000 on something.
It's easier to spend than it is to save, much like how it's easier to buy a meal in a restaurant than to spend the time cooking it in the kitchen from scratch. To me, any person with a credit card can go in and buy a bag or a meal. It takes skill and discipline to NOT do that, save the money and either make it yourself, or make the conscious choice to buy a SIMILAR bag that makes you JUST as happy, and ignoring the fact that you won't be able to floss that you dropped $2000 on a single purse.
What do you think? Am I way off base on this one? Or just too far into my frugal/saver mindset?
It's just a BAG y'all!
Keep in mind, she bought the bag for herself right? To make herself happy? So why would she care if I knew what the bag was and how much it cost? If she really bought the bag to make herself happy, she wouldn't care if people knew what the bag was or how much it cost. She would just be content in knowing it was exactly what SHE wanted.

(I must admit though. It's a really pretty, cool bag. But not for $2000.) HEHE!!

20 Leave me some love...:
I agree wholeheartedly. I would never spend $2000 on a purse. Or a dress. Or a pair of shoes for that matter. There are so many nicer things you can do for that money. Who cares if the purse you tote all your junk around in cost $20 or $2000... Not me.
I agree...however I think I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't say I don't kind of understand where she's coming from. I have a confession...I LOVE high end glasses. And I get some kind of satisfaction with wearing fancy pants frames that most people don't know what brand they are. Although I don't spend $2,000 on them (I did spend just under $250 on my last pair, but they were 50% off from $475). Then again I don't boast at how much they are valued at, and I did pay with money I had set aside. I'd be more likely to brag that I'd found a pair of Gold & Wood frames for only $50...not that I paid the $2,000 that they retail for ;-)
One more thing, I would NOT spend as much money on shoes or clothes as I do on my glasses...
(and I like the purse better in white! Although its not $2k worth in my book...)
Viviane: Precisely.. but if $2000 on a bag makes her happy then it should make her happy without the approval of others.
QL: Good point. But you know what? Those make YOU happy you don't care if people don't recognize the brands....
And I agree - the white one is my fave
The padlock kind of gave it away--its a signature for the Chloe Paddingtons. Maybe she bought it because she likes the style? Or appreciates the craftmanship? Or wants something she can sell for at least 75% of its price if she ever tires of it? Or to have a bag she can pass down to her daughter one day? You'll never know unless you ask her.
If she's really your friend and knows you well, then she probably isn't trying to impress you since she knows you're very frugal.
I recognized it *blush*
However, $2000 for a BAG?! That's obscene! And you're right - sure, it's a status bag, but not a whole lotta people are going to recognize it.
I'd much sooner save the money, too :P
lol, sorry FB, but I think it's FUGLY!!
One of the reasons I don't buy designer stuff (not that I could afford it anyway) is that a lot of it I find is not to my taste. I guess that's a good thing?
"It takes skill and discipline to NOT do that, save the money and either make it yourself..."
I thought THAT was a really great observation. I will definitely remember that the next time I am tempted by something fashionable and functional (like my Vespa!). It is harder and more admirable to save for something. :) Thanks for reminding me.
$2000?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!??!?!
... I would never... never... NEVER!!!!
I like the new layout. But, I still feel attached to the previous one.
I agree with the Fugly comment. I'm sorry, I don't want to be rude but if my friend and I had that exact conversation it would end like this:
Me: You is a crazy bitch! $2000?!?!
That's just me though. If your friend has riches galore and its her thing... power to her but for me... NOT A CHANCE!
Elle: Good point, but still, the point is that she expected me to KNOW what the bag was and how much it cost LOL
I don't mind if she buys it to love it and pass it on, but don't buy it for the sake of showing off.
Rae: LOL!!! No need to feel embarassed.. ;)
My whole point is she bought it to show off.
Ginger: Hey, different bags for different folks. I love it LOL but not for $2k...
and you're welcome. It's totally more admirable to people that you held back and saved the cash rather than spent it (spent what you didn't have)
Secretista: if she had the cash why not? but this is the chick who is in debt waiting for Prince Charming...
Dolly: *shrug* not hurting my feelings :) We each like different things. I happen to think it's pretty, but lol.. .damn did she freak out when I didn't recognize it
love this post. i've just finished reading shira boss's green with envy: why keeping up with the jones is keeping us in debt. for your friend's next b-day, buy a knock-off and shove a copy inside ;)
chloe is my favorite bag brand. and the answer to your #15 bag contest thingy.
i just got a new one on friday. swoon
I'm in the group that thinks $2000 for a purse is insanity. That said, if someone wants to buy that bag and it makes her happy, good for her. But I think it's interesting that the first thing she asked you about the bag was whether you knew how much it cost. If she was really just buying it to make herself happy, she wouldn't care whether people recognized it or knew what it cost.
Michelle: I TOTALLY should.. :) But I'm not sure she'd read it lol. Maybe Sophie Kinsella's shopaholic series?
Alexa: I do think their bags are cute, and what kind did you get on Friday?
Frugal babe: YUP that's what *I* thought!!!!!!!!!! if it made her happy, so what if I knew it cost 2 grand?
It's funny what simplifying and embracing frugality will do to a girl. At this point, I think I'd be embarrassed to carry that bag. I'd feel like I was screaming for attention. (Of course, I'd probably get over it... :))
Sara: LoL!! I would too, if that bag was free :P
Ok, I guessed it was a Chloe only because of the padlock but for $2k? Seriously?
Listen, I'm not a gal to begrudge their friends on purses and stuff. If you love it, will love the hell out of it, can use it on the daily and get serious use out of it, that's your call. However, if you aren't buying it because you HAD to have it because YOU loved it, I would go "HUH"
I bought a somewhat pricy designer bag that I've fondled for 2 years - only because it was major %%% off at Smartbargains.com, with a coupon AND cash back. I didn't tell my friends OHHH look I bought XYZ. They saw it, they commented, we moved on. I have used that bag EVERY day since and I still love it like it was it's first day in my hands.
But I can say, I don't think I'd pay $2k for a bag. *sigh*
Good for you for teasing her a bit ;)
Lys: AMEN! If you love it, love it for it being a bag, not because it's $2k... jeez :D

I don't think there's anything wrong with spending $2000 on a handbag...as long as you have the money (hey, somebody's got to keep the economy going!). What I think is tacky is her asking if you noticed the bag, and then talking about how much it costs. If she loves the bag, fine, but she shouldn't talk about the price. BTW, while I loved the chloe bay and heloise bags, i always thought the paddingtons were way to "it" (particularly with the silly lock) bag to be worth it...and I would try to talk a friend out of a bag that will only be cool for one season.
