Let me tell you why I hate Lipstick Jungle... the whole episode just fell flat. It was like champagne without the bubbles.
The one (Brooke Shields) failed at her marriage but couldn't figure out that it was her neglect that was doing it. She was at work the entire time, freakin' out, her husband from the get-go was clearly upset and not able to cope, and was resentful of the entire situation.
The other one who looks half asian to me, doesn't want to be rescued but ended up leaning on her guy to send her a jet to Japan to pick her up and comfort her. Uh. WHAT? Sounds to me like her life is pretty peachy even if she is losing fashion business or whatever.
The entire show just rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't get 'into' the characters, I didn't really connect with any of their profiles except the blonde one who had the affair with that kind of drugged out clubber. But in general, I don't think I'll be watching Lipstick Jungle again.
Cashmere Mafia seems like the better of the two, if you're craving for a Sex and the City fix. It's like Tastee Delight. Or fat-free yoghurt. Nothing but the real thing will satisfy you but it's good enough to do the job in the meantime.
It's like an 'after-the-dating' version with kids, family, inflated bank accounts and instead of focusing just on Carrie and her life and perspective on her friends and their relationships, it's focusing on all 4 women equally.
I love the catty bitchiness of the 4 women as they band together, bond, and fight NYC shrews and others vying for their job, their men and their lives.
It's even a bit like Desperate Housewives, without the blatant comedy.
The clothing and the wittiness of the show is even better than Lipstick Jungle but nowhere close to Sex and the City. Maybe in time it will be, but I'm not expecting miracles.
I just need an SATC fix for now.
Even the music is better.

16 Leave me some love...:
I have to admit, I never really got into SATC. There were a few things about it that just put me off. I do, however, thoroughly enjoy Cashmere Mafia! I love the flashy color and fashion, the characters, even the fact that I have no idea what the ladies actually 'do' for a living. I think it was Kristen on E! who basically said Cashmere Mafia sort of embraces its campiness while Lipstick Jungle tries too hard. That's the vibe I get from it as well.
Plus, I love Miranda Otto and Lucy Liu. The other two ladies are new to me but I'm liking them too.
I'm trying to give up cable altogether -- after all, my husband and I survived for a few years without it. We were almost there when the writers started trickling back to work. We're giving up the DVR rental, but my husband has replaced it with a homemade box.
On the other hand, I already spent the amount we would save on cutting cable on a certain floral accessory ; )
At this point, I think I owe it to my hubby to keep the cable so he can keep watching SciFi and Discovery.
Hopefully you will go read my post from today...things turned out okay, actually, things turned out great!
Lipstick Jungle isn't as exciting as Cashmere Mafia. But, I still watch it because the Fashions are inspiring.
TRUE THAT ABOUT THE MUSIC!!!
I generally agree with your review, however, since I read lipstick jungle I kinda feel more connected with the characters.... however yes the fasion is way better on cashmere!
megan: Cashmere Mafia is also admittedly one of my favourites because of Lucy Liu :) But I know what they all do (somewhat) but in general, they're all just fab.. esp that redhead - what's er name?
Glad to hear things turned out
Meg: I've given up TV too.. I just watch the episodes online :)
Secretista: Something about the characters turns me off... Lindsay Price is really beautiful but her character makes my teeth itch
bitterbabe: I think I'll stick to Cashmere from now on
I wouldn't say I was bowled over when I saw the first episode of Cashmere, but I lost interest in Lipstick within 20 minutes. Last night I had a Cashmere marathon to catch up on the episodes I've missed and I have to say it's growing on me. I'm a big fan of Frances O'Connor and I think Miranda Otto is really good. The writing is getting better and I love that there is a show about women where, in spite of the fact that their lives may be messy, the women aren't (ie. Gray's Anatomy). It's refreshing to see women portrayed as having it "together" instead of being totally neurotic. And... love the fashion and interiors. Beautiful!
Amy: I was the same way at first. The first episode didn't grab me... but I really love the acting of Otto and Liu the best, but the other two, O'Connor and the blonde has a kind of endearing charm...
I think you hit it on the head when you said that they have it 'together' instead of being neurotic and falling apart all the time instead of breathing deep and pulling it together (like when Ottot was in the divorce lawyer's office and refused the tissues)
I watched the first episode of Lipstick and it just didn't hold my attention. I saw a few minutes of Cashmere, so I'll have to watch that show. Why are they all so filthy rich?
I haven't seen Lipstick, but I'm already addicted to Cashmere Mafia! Although it is really similar to SATC in that it is about 4 women in NYC, I don't really think you can compare the two - SATC was way more about the single life in the city and much more focused on men, while Cashmere seems more balanced between men, family, and work.
I did read the book Lipstick Jungle though, and I liked that...will have to watch it when I get the chance, at least just to form an opinion! :)
Flair: I forced myself to finish Lipstick.... I just didn't click with the characters. Made me want to slap Lindsay Price for acting like a weirdo...
Clueless: SATC is def. more about single life, and Cashmere is more about men family and work.. you're right - which is why it's like the "after" SATC sort of show
I was totally referring to the tissue moment.
You're psychic!
(...and her speech to the cheater hubby after the photo shoot was excellent).
My one main gripe is that Caitlin's make-up is awful -- just because she works in cosmetics doesn't mean she should be wearing all of it. Ew. Too much. Miranda Otto always looks perfect. I bought hot rollers today because of her. So worth it. My morning routine just got a lot easier.
Amy: She's "cold" but her acting gives me the shivers :)
Caitlin's makeup is a bit of awful isn't it. She needs to tone it down and be neutral but I think her character demands it.... she's kind of like a Carrie - a bit of a mess
I agree with you completely. Although I missed Lipstick Jungle when it premiered, it doesn't sound like I missed much. It actually sounds even more over the top than Cashmere Mafia. The difference btw SATC and these new shows is that real women could relate to it more, thus making them more appealing. How many women you know are actually COO's, Publishers, and make over 7 figures? If the writers brought them more to life, they might stand a chance...
Alison: They're quite inspiring.. but I'm not sure we want to make them too ordinary only because it's supposed to be a bit unrealistic so that we aspire/watch it.... but hey, the fashions are really what i'm going for LOL
