Wardrobe Series: Finishing Line

What to do with the mountain of clothes you’ve got to get rid of

- If you still can, return it. Of course, you need the receipt, tags, and the whole shebang, but it may be possible!

- Hold a clothing swap (couple of girlfriends, watching Sex and the City, bringing potluck dishes, swapping clothes with one another). Anything left over gets donated by the hostess.

- Donate everything, and get a tax receipt.

- Take it to a consignment shop and they’ll sell it for you, and give you up to 50% of the sale price.

- Sell the great items with tags on Ebay.

- Give them away to your friends/family who are the same size as you without wanting anything in return (not a clothing swap)

Then, take a look at what you have left, and feel great about what you’ve done. Not only have you streamlined your closet, you probably don’t feel as guilty about what you’ve kept, and you have pieces that are easy to match together, pick out and make you feel fabulous.

Now for the Closet Organization

Now that your closet can breathe, everything has to be organized so you feel great about picking out what to wear each morning.

Here are my tips:

- Get those drawer organizers (like for socks, ties, whatever), because it’s easier than trying to ball up socks (they lose elasticity) and to try and pair them together when they’re in a big mess in a drawer.

- For belts, ties, and scarves, get those hangers with hooks, and hang it all up. It makes it easier, keeps everything tidy, trim, pressed and neat, and is not a tangled mess of items.

- Try and hang up as much as possible. Except for fine knits, and sweaters, almost anything can be hung up. Like your pants, your skirts, use those special hangers with those two clamp sections to hold your pants and skirts. It saves room in your closet, and keeps the pressed sections nice and crisp in your pants.

- Display your jewellery. If you can afford the space and the cost, those thin flat drawers are fabulous, but if you are like me and tight on a budget, hang up those necklaces on little hooks (3M makes some plastic ones you can paste on the wall).

And as for your earrings, buy those bead organizer containers and put each pair of earrings in each slot. They’ll keep your jewellery from tangling into a huge ball and being broken.

Or you can put your jewellery in those hoisery and sock organizers that hang up. My friend puts all of her earrings in those.

- And if there are any items that can’t fit or be hung up because of their awkward shape, think about using boxes. They look clean, pretty and organized at first glance.

You’ve done a great job with the topic. We should team up and tour the world as organizing superheros. Cluttered closets beware!!!
