Why a Canadian cannot order from Amazon.com

In a follow-up to my post about the different portable scanners I’m thinking of, someone had mentioned about being able to buy from Amazon.com….

But I kept getting this restriction when I tried due to my geography. So I emailed them asking why and I got this email:

HOW DO I KNOW IF A SPECIFIC KITCHEN OR SOFTWARE ITEM CAN BE SHIPPED
TO MY COUNTRY?

For software, electronics accessories, kitchen and housewares, and hand tools, if an item can be shipped to a non-U.S. destination (currently, France, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom), this will be noted in the Shipping Information on the product detail page.

Reason?

At this time, due to warranty restrictions and import/export laws, we can ship only books, music, videos, and DVDs to most destinations outside the U.S. We can also ship some software, electronics accessories, kitchen and housewares, and hand tools to addresses in France, Germany, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

There are various restrictions on manufacturers’ warranties and the import and export of some items throughout the world that do not apply to books, CDs, and videos. For that reason, Amazon.com can’t ship many of the products we sell outside the U.S.

Please understand that this policy is based on warranty issues, manufacturer restrictions, and Federal law, and as such, cannot be amended at the discretion of our Customer Service department.

I don’t believe it.

If I can order electronics and items from Best Buy and other places in the States and have it shipped across the border to Canada, then it should be OK.

If the restrictions are a problem, why the hell can they ship to Europe but not across the border to Canadians?

Ridiculousness..

Maybe the reason in the end is VERY good, but I still am not convinced about their logic of why they cannot ship items to Canada.
