iPod covers, things and skins, oh my! Tuesday, October 16, 2007

So.. as you all know, I'm currently obsessed with my new 6th generation 80GB iPod video, but I am DEATHLY afraid of it getting scratched, damaged or dropped. You should see me cradle this thing... you'd think it was a newborn the way I baby it.

Anyway, I've taken to wrapping it in a scarf, but that isn't a good way to keep it scratch free, so I've taken suggestions from you readers, and have decided to compile a list of what I've found so far as covers!

Gelaskins

These are just a skin covering, a cool sticker if you will.... if you want to make your iPod more personalized, as well as scratch free. The only con I see is that I'd be afraid of dropping it. Ok, I'm afraid ANYWAY, but at least with a silicone or hard cover, it has a chance of surviving.

Invisible Shield

Same deal. Just a skin, but it's clear. Too hard to show a picture of a clear skin..

iSkin (evo3)

This is the one that's been recommended to me so far, but isn't quite as cute or sexy as the other ones I'm going to be showing...But I'm hearing stories about you dropping it and it surviving!?!?? Sounds good to me. :P But I don't like that the gorgeous silver airbrushed front is being hidden by this silicone thing... that apparently attracts lint, pet hair, dander and dust...

Fabrixcases

SO, SO, SO CUTE. Not practical AT ALL (maybe if I got the next case, and used this as my carrying case.. hmmmm).... but I love the fabrics and how CUTE they are, especially the bloom one (looks like Acme Made's vintage bloom print)

Griffin Technology Reflect Shield

THIS is a sexy beast. When the screen lights up, it shows through the chrome, like by magic. HOW HOT IS THAT :) The only thing is that the front is all shiny and cool-mirror like, but it could get really gross with fingerprints all over it, and whatever else. The back is all a black rubberized material, so it's going to give me a good grip at least. I am also not too thrilled that there isn't a thin cover over the ClickWheel so I can keep the white ClickWheel clean.

So, these are the ones I've been ogling lately.. I'm leaning towards the Reflect Shield because it's just plain sexy....and possibly the FabrixCase to carry it in (have to baby my baby!)

10 Leave me some love...:

The reflect is magical. Does it scratch easily, though? Because that would make me much sadder than one of the others getting scratched. Cloth case would help.

If you were my offline friend and lived near me, I'd totally make you a cloth case for free (if you liked my fabric stash) or for a couple bucks spent on store fabric.

(This is why I'll never get ahead, I love to make things for people)

FB, the Invisible Shield is ANNOYING to get on, especially if you're like me and want the shield perfectly positioned. I also have the Fabrix case and using this makes the Invisible Shield peel away from the iPod; it is that tight a squeeze. On the plus side, this means you can hold the iPod inside the Fabrix case upside down and it won't fall it. But given this, I think an iPod with the Griffin Reflect on it wouldn't fit in the Fabrix case. Plus mine (in Black Flora print) got grubby really quickly.

I want one of those wallets that holds your iPod, mobile, and credit cards/money ... need to find a store that ships to Australia though. Plus I really want the iPhone when it comes out here, so I'm thinking of just waiting for that instead of investing in more accessories for my 2G Nano.

Mrs. Micah: I don't know if it scratches easily.. it's something I'd have to wait for until a review comes out or something - or the company can tell me what it's made of, and I do a search on it.. :)

Awww... that's so sweet of you to say :) I think if I got the fabric myself, it might be better to make my own iPod case now that you mention it -... Husband can be pretty handy with a needle :P

Vath:... oh. Yes. I'm very much like you (as you well know), and the shield is a pain in the butt? DAMN IT... why can't I just spray some liquid on it that'll coat the damn iPod in a shield and not hurt anything else, and be perfectly fine... LOL

Ok.. back to the drawing board.. Reflect case is still my #1 until I can figure out the price (eek!) and the material in front...

I like those wallets that hold everything, but I don't need a wallet. I just need a case.. I have a wallet! .. I should make my own damn company doing cute cases for the iPod that make sense...

FB, it took me aaaaages to get the shield onto my little nano (cf. my boyfriend, who put his shield on his shuffle in ... oh, five seconds?). Not only do perfectionists like ourselves need to get the pieces positioned just so, we need to work out the air bubbles! Luckily most of them go away in the first 24 hours after application.

Having said all that, I am going to send in for the lifetime replacement guarantee (even though it is Fabrix's fault my Shield is peeling), which just costs me $2.95 shipping. I'm not looking forward to applying it all over again, but seeing as I'm lemming the iPhone there is no point buying a new case. See, you're rubbing off on me! And the shield really does protect against scratches, it's pretty cool.

Maybe I should start making fabric cases for sale...hmm. I'd just borrow a friend's iPod and get some dimensions. Good idea!

My boyfriend can vouch for the Invisible Shield. It's completely clear (as you may have noticed) and is very durable and scratch resistant. The only problems are, yes, difficult in putting it on and also I'm not sure that it gets much protection when dropped. Completely scratch-proof, though, and you don't have to worry about your fingerprints on it. :)

You're such a techie, FB!

Vath: I think I may get that invisible shield just to make sure it doesn't scratch. And it'd be cheaper than the reflective thing too...

Mrs. Micah: Let me know once you get some fabric cases out ;)

J. Lowe: Hmm.. Vath is saying that for sure the application is an issue.. esp for people like me - really a perfectionist..

Val: LOL :) I am.. I'm a huge geek

Hey FB! If you're obssessed, you're not alone. My husband is too. He scours this website: http://www.ilounge.com/ In case you haven't been there, it's pretty great. There's lots of tips on skins and other stuff.

I love the stickers, but agree with you about dropping it. I have a case that I can run with. It's super durable and I'm happy with it...it could be cuter, though.

Ms. M&P: OOO!! iPod lounge!? ... oh yes.. :) Come to me... lol

I think we should start our own company making iPod cases and other cool, cute things geared towards women :P
